History
To say that Namjoon's early life was idyllic wouldn't be far from the truth; at least not how it looked from the outside. He was well cared for by trained nannies, allowed to pursue whichever interests or whims he wished; afforded no small reign of control over the family home in Seoul and the staff under his mother's employ. Was he spoiled? Absolutely. Did his mother care? Not in the slightest. All the same, he was a momma's boy through and through, even as she seemed to want little to do with him, instead spending her time off somewhere in the city. Finding out why his mother resented him and his father was so often absent is Namjoon's earliest memory. He had a half-brother, only seven months older than he; his relative had been living in Busan with his mother and their father's attention for his entire life. Until someone murdered her in cold blood.
Their father was clearly too busy running his company to raise a child on his own, so Namjoon's half-brother was moved to Seoul with a woman who didn't want a physical reminder of her husband's infidelity, and a spoiled brat his age, their father only visiting at most two times a month. However, having someone his own age around as they start their lives in school forces Namjoon to shift his previously self-centered perspective, at least somewhat.
To be frank, school is boring for Namjoon, and while he could easily skip a grade, he doesn't want to chance being without his half-brother's company. As time goes on, the only time either of them see their father is when the younger is summoned to Busan to play golden heir to the company CEO, paraded around like he was some sort of trophy that their father had acquired and poured every ounce of effort and intellect into. The only real problem that cropped up was that... Namjoon could not be less interested in international business.
The brothers both finished high school and opted to get their military service out of the way early, and that time span was just as boring for Namjoon as high school. He'd been afforded a relatively comfortable office clerk position thanks to his father's influence, and he found himself seeking to challenge himself mentally elsewhere. He studied both English and Japanese, took up writing music and sent letters with lyrics back and forth with his half-brother.
Service ended, and the pair hatched a game plan that would benefit them both. Namjoon's role was to spend a year in Japan and invest his own money in an intelligent way, make sure none of the funds could really be traced without an actual government investigation, given that they wanted to avoid conflict with their father as long as they could help it. Smart choices ended up paying copious dividends after just eight months, better than planned. Tokyo helped him mature into the man he wanted to be, but it was also where he fell in love and had his heart broken for the first time.
He was more withdrawn and careful with his words when he returned to Seoul for college, his father's alma mater of Korea University being the obvious choice. He had no say in whether or not he was joining a fraternity, but he got along well enough with the other members of Lambda Phi Epsilon. He took up archery and photography as ways to unplug from the world and focus on a target for a time, of course was given little choice about his major. It was only a heated debate on the phone with his father that let him opt for Business Administration & Management instead of International Business, his minor of Investments & Securities making sense given his experience in Tokyo, the plans he had with his brother.
His brother was not welcome in the fraternity when he enrolled in the school a year later, even just during rush season; while they may have had the same father, the president at the time was adamant that due to the freshman being born out of wedlock that he had no place as a legacy. Namjoon spent much of his sophomore year speaking with the vice president about how little they agreed with how things were being run, quietly gained the support of the other members who weren't going to be graduating at the end of the year. Junior year saw Namjoon as vice president of the fraternity, and while they did still sometimes kick people out of their parties, he cracked down hard on anyone tampering with drinks, made absolutely certain ever single one of his brothers understood consent. The basement, revered as a frightening place, was... at least cleaned up and redecorated to be more inviting should anyone have any guests over, the hidden cameras uninstalled and the places the lenses had been positioned covered with drywall caulk prior to a fresh coat of paint.
Just after summer break began, Namjoon's mother broke her years-long silence to reach out with a request: find out where so much of his father's money had been going over the past four or five years. If she hired a private investigator herself, the trail would lead directly back to her. Unsure as to why his mother couldn't tell that clearly his father was continuing to be unfaithful- especially given the lack of love between the pair- he rolled his eyes and agreed. The envelope that the investigator passed to him just over a month later contained evidence that would change more lives than just those of his mother and father, so he's taking the rest of the summer to mull that decision over while also beginning to scout locations for the business he and his brother are going to open after Namjoon graduates.
